Rapid dengue diagnosis and interpretation.

چکیده
Outbreaks of dengue fever (DF) and dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) pose a serious threat to more than 85 tropical and sub-tropical countries throughout the world. The World Health Organization has identified dengue to be one of the most under-reported diseases, with actual cases in the millions. It is also recognised as one of the most important and rapidly rising mosquito-transmitted infections in the world. The alar-ming increase in cases may be due to many factors, including rapid population growth, expanding urbanization, rising economies, inadequate municipal water supplies, and difficulties in handling refuse disposal. These lead to an abundance of new breeding sites for the mosquito vectors of the disease, while human migration patterns disperse vectors and viruses into new areas. National public health authorities are often unable to deal successfully with dengue outbreaks and epidemics. Although a vaccine developed in Thailand against dengue viruses is on the horizon, it will take a few years before i t becomes available.

Dengue with Normal Platelet Count and no Hemoconcentration: Automated Hematogram in Cases with Underlying Thalassemia
Dear Editor, Dengue is an important arbovirus infection. This infection can result in an acute febrile illness. The important hematological abnormalities included hemoconcentration and thrombocytopenia (1). Due to the decreased platelet count, the patient might develop petechiae and hemorrhagic complication. In endemic area, the presumptive diagnosis of dengue is usually derived by the cl...
متن کاملA comparative study on the performance of two commercial anti-dengue IgM assay kits.
The performance of a commercial rapid immunochromatographic dengue IgG/IgM assay device was evaluated against an in-place dengue IgM-capture ELISA in the National Public Health laboratory. Of the 239 serum samples from patients with clinical diagnosis of acute dengue illness, 140 and 99 samples were tested positive and negative respectively for anti-dengue IgM by the in-placed ELISA. Comparativ...
متن کاملComparison of two dengue NS1 rapid tests for sensitivity, specificity and relationship to viraemia and antibody responses
BACKGROUND Dengue is a major public health problem in tropical and subtropical countries. Rapid and easy diagnosis of dengue can assist patient triage and care-management. The detection of DENV NS1 on rapid lateral flow tests offers a fast route to a presumptive dengue diagnosis but careful evaluations are urgently needed as more and more people use them. METHODS The sensitivity and specifici...
متن کاملComparison of NS1 antigen detection ELISA, real time RT-PCR and virus isolation for rapid diagnosis of dengue infection in acute phase.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Diagnosis of dengue infection in acute phase is important for clinical care, implementing control measures, surveillance and research. Currently, dengue fever is diagnosed by means of virus isolation, reverse transcriptase PCR or IgM and IgG based ELISA. Given the limitations of all the existing diagnostic methods, there is a need for rapid, sensitive and high throughput...
متن کاملPrognostic value of rapid test for diagnosis of dengue in Nepalese patients during 2010 epidemic.
BACKGROUND Dengue is an emerging vector borne disease in Nepal and rapid diagnostic test is important for early diagnosis of the disease. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of commonly used rapid immunochromatographic test kit in Nepal during 2010 dengue epidemic and to assess disease burden of dengue. METHODS A total of 131 acute and nonacute serum samp...
